Get Control Over Doveweed in Your Lawn

Doveweed is an invasive type of summer annual weed that’s making its home in lawns across Georgia. This weed produces creeping stems, or stolons, and grows in dense clusters once the root has been established. It thrives in moist conditions like those we typically experience in hot, humid summers.

Doveweed spreads vegetatively, meaning that it spreads as new shoots form from existing plants. It can also spread when the plant stems are broken by mowing. In addition, doveweed seeds are tough and can remain dormant underground for several years before they sprout.

Because doveweed spreads easily and the weed seeds can remain dormant underground for a while, it’s not an easy weed to eliminate from your lawn. Getting rid of doveweed takes time and multiple treatments to successfully eliminate it. In fact, it’s not uncommon for it to take two to three years of continuous treatments, including pre- and post-emergent applications, to eliminate doveweed.
